Flutterbug Herstory
I purchased this 67 VW beetle in Seattle Washington in 1989. I was the third owner... AND the last words Gary (the 2nd owner) said to me as he handed over the keys were... "Don't paint it or anything...
So, 14 years later, here it is in all it's splendor!!!
It has been an "art car" from the first day he was in my possession. He has evolved many times since it's from it's first free form painted surface (with theatrical acrylics). Ten years and multiple layers of paint later, its crysilas state began last year. He made his maiden voyage to BurningMan in 2002 as a "Pink Plushie". Fully black light sensitive interior and exterior, it was a miniscule dot of pink on the vast playa. I patterned the whole car and sewed it a neon pink "outfit" that it sported there and back and around town many monthes. Between caked on playa dust and oregon mud, the look just wasn't as... shall we say... fresh anymore? So it all had to be peeled off. This was also the completion of the interior (see photo below) It has lived in Seattle; San Francisco; Summerville, South Carolina Asheville North, Carolina; and now, for the past 9 years, back again in Ashland Oregon.
You can view the Flutterbug any day in Ashland at 116 Lithia Way in front of my shop "Atomica".
